Vision and Purpose

Every great project starts with a broad concept. For Whiskey Rodeo, I wanted to bring several ideas together with generative AI tools and see if I could create music that would authentically connect with audiences.

Reclaiming Cultural Heritage

Country music has multi-cultural roots in rural American communities, reflecting their joys, struggles, and enduring spirit. From the beginning corporate interests have co-opted this rich cultural heritage, diluted its authentic messages, obscured its origins, and transformed it into a commodified product to sell on the mass market. My goal for this project is for it to serve as a vehicle to reclaim a part of that cultural heritage while addressing contemporary issues in a meaningful and relatable way.

Culture War and Political Theater

The modern cultural landscape is often characterized by polarized debates and political theater, where genuine dialogue gets lost in performative noise. Country music, with origins in authentic storytelling and expression, has not been immune to these dynamics. Many artists have found themselves navigating a tightrope between staying true to their roots and catering to a broader, more commercial audience. I wanted to see if I could use AI to better navigate this terrain and foster authentic connections with listeners, steering away from superficial cultural divides and instead promoting understanding through music.

The Original Rednecks

The term “redneck” has undergone significant transformation over the decades, often being misrepresented in mainstream media. It originally denoted hardworking, rural individuals committed to positive change through deep connections to their land and community. Unfortunately, the term has been co-opted and misused, leading to misconceptions that overshadow the genuine values and traditions it once represented. An initial inspiration for the character of Randy Tucker was the spirit of the original rednecks—proud, resilient, and committed to positive change.

Leftist Traditions in Country Music and Rural America

Contrary to popular belief, country music has a history rich in leftist traditions and has often served as a platform advocating for social justice, workers’ rights, and community solidarity. Artists like Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson used their music to highlight societal issues and champion the underrepresented. I wanted to build on this legacy through Whiskey Rodeo, and use it as a means of addressing contemporary issues from a first-hand, lived perspective. The intent is that the themes are not only relevant, but also personal and relatable to rural and working-class audiences that may feel disconnected from mainstream political discourse.

Bridging Divides with AI

Addressing Sensitive Issues without Alienating Audiences

One of the challenges of addressing political and social issues through music is ensuring the message stays relatable. There’s a fine line between advocacy and preaching, and it’s easy to turn off listeners by leaning too far towards the latter. Collaborating with AI lends itself to an iterative song writing process where lyrics can be developed that are clear and impactful without being too overbearing.

Leveraging “Stochasitc Noise” to Promote Thoughtful Songwriting

AI is an excellent tool for brainstorming and generating first drafts. That said, aligned AI models often lack the “edge” necessary to tackle sensitive topics directly. Current Large Language Models (LLMs) are often hamstrung by censorship mechanisms, limiting their ability to fully evaluate and discuss pressing issues in unfiltered terms.

I wanted to use this watered down output and “stochastic noise”—the unpredictable and varied outputs generated by AI—as a springboard for inspiration, that I could then revise, edit, and refine to align with my creative vision for Whiskey Rodeo

First-Hand, Lived Perspectives Over Theory

Authenticity is vital to music that truly connects with listeners. While theory and ideology may inform perspectives, it’s first-hand, lived experiences that breathe life into songs. This is why I decided to create “Randy Tucker” and “Whiskey Rodeo” for this project. I wanted to provide AI models with more context to help them better understand my creative vision and produce better results. Randy Tucker then, is the persona I ask the AI to embody when working on the project.

Shaping Randy “Whiskey” Tucker’s Persona

With a clear vision in mind, I started to flesh out Randy Tucker’s character using LLMs like ChatGPT and Claude.AI to help me brainstorm. Over time I slowly refined his name, physical description, backstory, and personality traits. This iterative process ensured that Randy wasn’t just a name but a fully realized persona with some depth and relatability. This process would provide useful context throughout the rest of the project, both for myself as well as the AI tools I would use.

Profile

Randy “Whiskey” Tucker is the heart and soul of Whiskey Rodeo, serving as the primary songwriter and charismatic frontman. Randy’s musical career began in gritty garage punk bands, where he honed his raw energy and rebellious spirit. Seeking a deeper connection to his roots, he transitioned into the cowpunk scene—a fusion of country’s heartfelt storytelling and punk’s defiant edge. This unique blend became Whiskey Rodeo’s signature sound, resonating with fans who crave authenticity and grit.

Randy’s wiry stature bears the marks of countless nights spent at bars and the rigors of life on the road. A graying mullet cascades rebelliously from beneath a well-worn cowboy hat, giving him a rugged, timeless look. Randy’s eyes, perpetually bloodshot from long nights of performing and storytelling, hold a glimmer of sharp insight and untold stories. His attire is a blend of practicality and rock ‘n’ roll flair that he wears like a second skin.

Randy’s songwriting is deeply personal, drawing inspiration from the eclectic array of characters he’s encountered on the road. His lyrics paint vivid portraits of truck drivers navigating endless highways, former factory workers grappling with lost dreams, bartenders who’ve heard it all, and souls living life on the brink. Each song is an unfiltered testament to the resilience and complexity of the human spirit, delivered with an authenticity that only someone like Randy could convey.

The music of Whiskey Rodeo draws from a diverse array of musical genres and personal experiences. The storytelling prowess of classic country artists blends seamlessly with the edgy sounds of punk rock, while hints of blues, rockabilly, and desert rock add depth and variety to the compositions. Tangential styles like doo-wop and metal occasionally seep into the music, showcasing versatility and willingness to experiment.

Brainstorming Album Concepts

Armed with a detailed artist profile, I engaged the AI to brainstorm a selection of album concepts. This involved generating potential album titles, exploring conceptual themes, and defining musical styles that would best convey Randy’s message. After reviewing and revising the AI’s output, I had it draft initial track lists for each album, detailing song titles, concepts, and musical descriptions. This process allowed me to develop a rough plan for Whiskey Rodeo’s entire “career”.

After developing the album and song concepts, all that’s left is actually writing the songs. 🙃 We’ll talk more about that in the next article. In the meantime, don’t forget to check out the Modal Shift Media YouTube channel for Whiskey Rodeo’s first album, “Corporate Cowboy”.
